“To tend the earth is always then to tend our destiny, our freedom and our hope.” ― bell hooks, Belonging: A Culture of Place
Black in Design 2025 considers the act of rooting not as nostalgia, but as methodology, a critical engagement with the spatial, spiritual, and environmental inheritances of the Black diaspora. The conference centers design as both a tool and a terrain for excavation: exploring lineage, land, and lore as intertwined forces shaping our communities. We explore how ritual operates not only as cultural practice but as spatial strategy: structuring memory, community, and meaning within and beyond the built environment. Across disciplines, we interrogate the ecologies that sustain us and the geographies that displace us, asking what persists, what is possible, and what must be designed differently. Through Black theologies, Black ecologies, and Black geographies, we gather to examine the architectures we inherit and imagine the futures we assemble, not simply by reaching forward, but by grounding deeply in what endures.
A comprehensive schedule will be available soon. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Meal and reception tickets will be available for purchase for registered attendees.
